Work Samples

Let's try to get Semester 1 work samples done for our first meeting. Why? because you will be doing some schoolwork anyway, so why not get these out of the way early? If we can get them done for our first meeting, we will have time to troubleshoot any issues that arise.

What and Why...
Twice per school year, (once each semester) Visions collects official work samples from students. These samples are intended to show our auditors that our enrolled students are actually enrolled, and that they are engaging in the academic activities on their master agreement and semester plan. They are also used to demonstrate that there is a responsible adult who is reviewing and or grading their work.

When..
Let's try to get them done at our LP1 meeting!

How...
Samples must be work from LP1. You may submit samples from your own curriculum, use the provided samples (grades K-8), or any combination of the two. (9th - 12th grade courses are so variable that it is impossible to create packets.)

Please provide one written sample from each subject.

Instructions for using provided samples (K-8th grades):

  • Download and print the work sample packet or individual pages you intend to use.
  • Have your student complete the worksheet(s).
  • Grade and or comment on each sample in a different color than the student worked.
  • Please do not put dates or LP#s on worksheets.
  • Please leave upper right corner blank for the school's generated label.
  • Match the standard code on your semester plan drop-downs for LP1 to the one on the sample. (Change the code if you need to, or we can do it together at the meeting.)
  • Either scan and email the samples to me or take a clear, level picture of the entire sample with your phone and text it to me. I will confirm that I received them and let you know if I need anything else. If you choose to do a work sample via Google Docs, just share the document with me allowing me to edit it.

If you would rather submit samples from your own curriculum (all 9-12th graders):

  • Samples cannot be from a religious publisher (handouts, worksheets with publisher’s name on them). Handwritten work on blank or lined paper that is from religious curriculum, but is not addressing religious themes, is fine.
  • Match the standard drop-downs on your semester plan for LP1 to the samples. You can make your best guess here, and I will help you when I collect the samples.
  • Samples cannot be a test or multiple choice, they must show student work. (Samples where student just matches, underlines, or circles items are not sufficient, there must be some written work on the page
  • Grade and or comment on each sample in a different color than the student worked.
  • Please do not put dates or LP#s on worksheets.
  • When possible, please leave upper right corner blank for label.
  • Either scan and email the samples to me or take a clear, level picture of the entire sample with your phone and text it to me. I will confirm that I received them and let you know if I need anything else. If you choose to do a work sample via Google Docs, just share the document with me allowing me to edit it.

Please don't hesitate to call, text, or email with questions about work samples.

New Policies - Effective June 2020

Important WIRE post...please read. The reimbursement section is the one that I feel will negatively impact some families: As of June 2020, Visions will no longer accept reimbursements for enrichment services (i.e. classes, lessons, conferences, trainings, etc)

Hi Home School families,

In order to continue to provide excellent service to Home School families, Visions In Education is offering the same funding to Home School students in the 2020/21 school year as was offered in the 2019/20 school year. Additionally, Visions has increased technology options for students and has also reviewed and updated certain policies and procedures to ensure all students and families continue to have access to the services provided. These new policies and offerings become effective on July 1, 2020.

Technology Updates:
  • Visions In Education has made a significant investment to make Chromebooks available for our Home School students. We will have two models available for rent in the coming year, a Lenovo that will be $200 per year and an Acer that will be $50 per year.
  • In addition, we are making available more Mac laptops for the coming year for students and they will continue to be rented at $350 per year.

Voucher Updates:
  • Visions In Education continues to work with Community Partners during this uncertain time to offer virtual services to families. In fact, the number of Community Partners offering virtual services to Visions’ students has increased from just under 50 Partners last February to over 480 Community Partners offering virtual services today.
  • Visions In Education will now pay for registration fees (included as part of an evoucher) for our Parks and Recreation Public Community Partners

Reimbursement Updates:
  • Visions In Education will continue to accept reimbursements for community college and field trips. Reimbursements for Enrichment services (i.e. classes, lessons, conferences, trainings, etc) will no longer be accepted. Visions In Education is working with many community partners to offer enrichment services through the Visions’ evoucher process so that students may continue to receive these types of services to support their education.

School Sponsored Events and Field Trip Updates:
  • When registering a student for school sponsored events or field trips that require a parent/guardian’s attendance, Visions In Education will allow the student’s funds to be used to pay for a single parent or guardian’s participation in that event or field trip as the chaperone. This will be part of the registration process in Launchpad.
  • Visions In Education will no longer be offering additional tickets to events or field trips for non-Visions students or additional family members. Students can be accompanied by a single parent/guardian and Visions will pay for the parent/guardian’s attendance via the student’s budget.

  • I will need your final grades/progress grades at our LP10 meeting or check out.
  • I am going to be uploading official, final semester plans for Visions beginning today, so if you make changes, please let me know via email or text.
  • The first day of school for next year is Tuesday, August 25th. CTs will be back working on August 10th and will contact families during the week of August 10th.

LP10 Check Out

***If you would rather schedule a regular meeting for LP10, please contact me asap so we can set that up. If we have already scheduled a regular meeting for LP10, you can disregard this post.***

It is time to schedule our LP10 check outs.

Zoom & Phone
I will send you a Zoom invitation, if you choose Zoom as your preference, or call you at the appointed time if you choose to meet by phone call.

Email & Text
If you choose to do your check out via email or text, please use the time slot as a deadline, and make sure we have confirmed everything by then.

To be ready for check out or LP10 meeting, please:
  • Log your LP10 attendance
  • Check that your semester plan is accurate through the end of LP10
  • Fill in your PE log (or email/text it to me if you'd rather do it on paper)
  • Have report card grades, optional effort grades, and comments ready. (See the post below)
  • Have any questions ready
Thank you! And let me know if you have any questions.

Report Card Information

Report card information for our LP10 meeting/check out:

Grades K-5:
Remember, there are no real "grades" for K-5. Report cards just track progress through the grade level standards - based on curriculum and standard completion.

3 = Proficient/At Grade Level Standard, 4 = Advanced/Exceeds Grade Level, 2 = Approaching Grade Level Standard, and 1 = Beginning/Not Yet Covered. Plusses and minuses can be used when is student is almost there, or not quite there. Most students will get 3s in most categories.
  • Download (or just view) sample report cards below. Look over the categories and see if you have any questions.
  • Decide if you would like to add optional effort grades and if so, have them ready.
  • Write up your overall comments and either email them to me or read them to me at our meeting/check out.
  • Have your progress grades ready. (If it is easier, just let me know which ones, if any, are NOT 3s.)
  • You don't need to fill out the LP10 progress tab on the semester plan. The report card will count for that.
Grades 6-12:
  • Check in on your student's grades and progress, keep close track between now and our LP10 meeting/check out.
  • Write up your overall comments and optional effort grades to give to me at our LP10 meeting/check out.
  • Have your final grades updated in your Semester Plan for our LP10 meeting/check out.
You can download/view samples here:
These are 2017-18 samples, but the categories are the same.

Getting Ready for LP10

We are fast approaching the end of this school year. What a crazy ride! Our last learning period (LP10) begins on Monday, May 18. The last day of school is June 4.

I will share out sample report cards next week to help you get ready.

In preparing for our LP10 meeting, this is what I will need from you:
  • Final Grades -  for grades 6-12
  • Progress report #'s  - for K-5 (most will be a 3, meaning that your student has mastered the standards for their grade level year.)
  • LP10 PE Log(s) completed
  • LP10 Attendance Log(s) completed
  • Are you continuing with Visions or withdrawing?
  • Plus, any questions you might have

If you haven't done so already, please use this form to indicate whether you would like a regular virtual meeting or a 15-minute parent only check-in for LP10. I will be sending out a schedule next week to set up our LP10 meeting.

Thank you!

Virtual Curriculum Fair

Excerpt from the Wire Post:
The Curriculum Vendor Fair is an invaluable opportunity for Home School families to research the curriculum options available to them. In lieu of hosting our annual fairs, which was among the events canceled in light of COVID-19, we created a document that serves as a repository of information on the curriculum vendors (now called Curriculum Partners) who would have been present at the 2020 fairs.

Master Agreements

You will be receiving your Visions master agreements via email sometime this week. Please make sure to sign them, and have your student(s) sign them, as soon as possible, to ensure your enrollment in Visions for next year.

If you have any questions about master agreements or course assignments, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you!

Ordering Notes

I know many of you are scrambling to use up your school funds by the May 1st deadline. However, I am getting a LOT of orders that I have to reject because they don't adhere to the Visions' Matrix.

I know it can be confusing to know what will be approved or rejected, and I have a strong belief that many unlisted items deserve approval. Please know that I spend hours going over orders, researching each item, trying to advocate for you. I will always go to bat for you if I can justify items as educational, or supporting the standards.

But please, refer to the matrix when ordering so you don't order things that are listed as "not approved".

Typical items that I am seeing orders for that are "not approved":

  • PE clothing
  • Games that are considered recreational rather than educational
  • Furniture items
  • Office equipment
  • Storage containers/bins
  • Stamps
  • Toys
  • Personal items
  • Sports equipment that goes over the $100 per year limit
  • Musical instruments that go over the $100 per year limit
  • Bulk quantities
  • Gardening Tools

Thanks!

LP 10 Meeting Plans

LP10 only has 13 days. 13 days is not enough to hold regularly scheduled meetings for everyone. Typically, we have had park days and group meetings to handle that. With the Covid-19 restrictions, park days and group meetings are not possible this year.

You have a choice in how you would like to conduct your LP10 meeting. Since I only need your report card grades, your attendance, your approved semester plan, and to check in with you on your plans for next year, we can either:

Schedule a "regular" virtual meeting (approx. 1hr per student for sharing work and conducting business)

or

Schedule a 15-minute check-in, with parents only, to make sure all of our compliance requirements are satisfied.

Which would you like to do?

Please submit your answer on this form as soon as possible so that I can schedule our LP10 meeting.

Thank you!

School Closure

Well. This is definitely an unusual time. I understand that an email went out to families on Friday with information about the school closure. It wasn't sent to me (CTs got a different email), so I don't know what it said, but I am getting quite a few questions about it. I'll try to clarify as best I can here.

Here is what I know...
  • The school is "closing" effective today through April 12.
  • Students and teachers will continue to work, unless they are unable to do so. Governor Newsom's executive order states "School districts must continue delivering high-quality educational opportunities to students through other options, distance learning and independent study."
  • This closure cancels ALL Visions' sponsored activities, events, group meetings, and face to face meetings during that time frame.
  • Our scheduled meetings will be held virtually.
  • Visions' main office will be closed to the public, however, staff will be working remotely.
This closure does not effect us the way it does a site based school as we can "attend" school around it. We are already uniquely set up for that. Our students don't have to miss any attendance days, which means we don't have to worry about the possibility of extending the school year in order to make up days like site based schools might.

Please let me know if you have questions. I'll answer the best I can.

Here is the link to the most recent WIRE post.

There is a Corona Virus Update and Information page on the Wire with some information and links to the CDC, California Department of Health, and county health departments.

Stay well.
