It is truly amazing how many people and companies are stepping up to support students across the country during this unprecedented time. Many are offering subscriptions, tutorials, and materials for free. Here are a few quality resources that are being created. Feel free to let me know if you find something great that isn't on one of these lists!

School Closure

Well. This is definitely an unusual time. I understand that an email went out to families on Friday with information about the school closure. It wasn't sent to me (CTs got a different email), so I don't know what it said, but I am getting quite a few questions about it. I'll try to clarify as best I can here.

Here is what I know...
  • The school is "closing" effective today through April 12.
  • Students and teachers will continue to work, unless they are unable to do so. Governor Newsom's executive order states "School districts must continue delivering high-quality educational opportunities to students through other options, distance learning and independent study."
  • This closure cancels ALL Visions' sponsored activities, events, group meetings, and face to face meetings during that time frame.
  • Our scheduled meetings will be held virtually.
  • Visions' main office will be closed to the public, however, staff will be working remotely.
This closure does not effect us the way it does a site based school as we can "attend" school around it. We are already uniquely set up for that. Our students don't have to miss any attendance days, which means we don't have to worry about the possibility of extending the school year in order to make up days like site based schools might.

Please let me know if you have questions. I'll answer the best I can.

COVID-19

I'm sure we all have concerns about the Novel Corona virus and how it could impact Visions' school activities and requirements. I know I do. It is such an evolving situation and things seem to change daily. What I can tell you is that Visions is making plans and monitoring the situation closely.

There is a Corona Virus Update and Information page on the Wire with some information and links to the CDC, California Department of Health, and county health departments.

In addition, I have been told...

  • If teachers are unable to support a family face-to-face, they will work with their administrator to determine if a virtual meeting is possible.
  • Visions will cancel events and classes that convene people if recommended and/or there is an identified an outbreak within a Visions’ community.
  • Visions is monitoring the Covid-19 impact County by County and will take action based on the activity within the county.
  • If there is a recommendation by the county’s local health agency Visions will follow it.

This week, all of our meetings are virtual so we have time to watch and see. I haven't heard any news about the Curriculum Fair/Picture Day scheduled for next week. If I do, I will share it immediately.

Stay well.

Jackson Test Prep & Physical Fitness Testing Day

Monday, March 23rd
Grace Fellowship
8040 CA-49, Jackson, CA 95642

Visions In Education Charter School is excited to offer our 2020 Jackson Test Prep and Physical Fitness Testing Day. On Monday, March 23, we will be doing Test Prep for the Smarter Balanced Assessment and conducting our annual Physical Fitness Testing (PFT). Did you know that last year, Visions students who did an Interim Assessment Practice Test scored approximately 43 points higher than those who did not? Yes, every bit of test prep and exposure familiarizes students with the testing format, calms the nerves and increases academic performance! We know it helps and have planned a fun day to provide that support!

Registration deadline is Monday, March 16th

Visions Curriculum Fair and Lifetouch Picture Day!

When: March 18th, 11:00 to 1:00
Where: Christ Community Church, 5025 Manzanita Ave., Carmichael, CA

Coming to Carmichael on Wednesday, Mar. 18, the Curriculum Vendor Fair opens up the world of curriculum options available to you by bringing together multiple curriculum vendors under one roof. Home School parents will have the opportunity to browse through curriculum and product samples, gather invaluable information, and learn more about our digital vendor offerings.

Intentionally held in March for those who wish to “know-before-they-buy” during early ordering in April, the fairs will also host multiple company representatives from all over the country who are there to discuss their curriculum in detail with you.

Visions will once again have kids activities available for TK-8th grade, Visions-enrolled students. We did this for the first last year and parents reported that it increased the value of the fair greatly by giving them the ability to better focus on exploring vendor tables and talking to curriculum representatives.

We will also be hosting our first ever Spring Picture Day throughout the day at the same locations!

We are still working on gathering our vendor attendee list for the Curriculum Vendor Fairs, so check back in February for a growing list of participants.

Testing Preview

Because public schools use taxpayer funds, they are required to participate in state testing to assess how they are meeting the needs of their students. All states that adopted the common core curriculum use the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) to test Language Arts and Math.

California's testing umbrella is called the California Assessment of Performance and Student Progress (CAASPP), it includes the SBAC, the California Science Test (CAST) and the Physical Fitness Test (PFT).
_______________________________________

Who takes what tests?
Students in grades 3 - 8 and 11 take the SBAC (Language Arts and Math)
Students in grades 5, 8, 11 (and 12th graders who did not take it last year) take the CAST (Science)
Students in grades 5, 7 and 9 take the PFT (Physical Fitness Test)

When is testing for our area?
SBAC and CAST testing will be held at Grace Church in Jackson Tuesday, May 5 - Friday, May 8 from 9 to 12. Remember, many students will only need to test Tuesday and Wednesday, or Tuesday through Thursday. The test is not timed, however, and students have Friday to finish if they choose to.

PFT testing is being held in various locations. The closest to us is in Jackson at Grace Church on Monday, March 23th at 12:30.

Practice Test Scoring Guides

I HIGHLY recommend that students and parents begin practicing online now (maybe doing as little as one question per day). That way you can do it in small bites and not overwhelm students. Research has shown that students that spend time practicing for the SBAC earn higher scores. This is probably because they are familiar with the context. The test may present material in a very different way than you do at home, but with guidance and practice, students will understand what is being asked and can do their best at test time without anxiety.

*Note: when you sign in to the test practice as a guest, the practice tests do not save your progress from day to day or give you scores. You will need to keep track of your previous answers or just put in anything to get back to the question you stopped at. You will also need the scoring guide from the link above to assess your students progress as they go. This is not ideal, and can be a little frustrating, but with a little pre-planning it is still worth it.

Questions? Let me know :)
