Ordering Deadline

The deadline for ordering vouchers, computers, books and materials for the 2018-19 school year is coming up. This is a good time to check your account and plan for the rest of the year.

Ordering deadline for vouchers, computers, books and materials for the 2018-19 school year is Friday, April 5.

Remember that you are now allowed to order vouchers for services through June 30th with this year's funding.

Early ordering for next year begins on April 22 and continues through June 28.

If you don't end up using all of your student funds for the year, the remaining money is transferred to the Visions General Fund account. This money is used for things like enrichment classes, tutoring, extra benefits for students in need etc. It is not wasted :) However, there is no rollover to the next school year.

PFT Test and SBAC Practice Sign-Ups

On Monday March 25th at 10 am (to 12 pm), Visions will host an SBAC Interim Practice Assessment (for grades 3-8 and 11) at Grace Church in Jackson. This is a chance for your students to practice with the SBAC assessments, at the site they will be testing, before the actual test dates. The interim assessments are shorter in duration than the end of year tests, and you will receive student scores.

Studies show that students who practice the assessments have lower anxiety and higher test scores than students who don't.

On the same day we will be hosting the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for grades 5, 7 and 9. Physical Fitness Testing will begin at 12:30.

Our Physical Fitness Test will consist of:

  • Height and weight measurements
  • 1 mile run
  • Push ups (untimed)
  • Trunk Lift
  • Curl-up/Sit-ups (untimed)
  • Shoulder Stretch

Here is a reference guide
Practicing these skills would help your student be more comfortable when the test arrives.

Tired of boring history curriculum? Take a look at History Unboxed. Yes, they are a little pricey, but the materials are quality and at least one of my families thinks they are well worth it! Thanks Veronica, Baruch, and Ana!

Testing - Attention Grades 3 - 9, 11 & 12

Because public schools use taxpayer funds, they are required to participate in state testing to assess how they are meeting the needs of their students. All states that adopted the common core curriculum use the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) to test Language Arts and Math.

California's testing umbrella is called the California Assessment of Performance and Student Progress (CAASPP), it includes the SBAC, the California Science Test (CAST) and the Physical Fitness Test (PFT).
_______________________________________

Who takes what tests?
Students in grades 3 - 8 and 11 take the SBAC (Language Arts and Math)
Students in grades 5, 8, 11 (and 12th graders who did not take it last year) take the CAST (Science)
Students in grades 5, 7 and 9 take the PFT (Physical Fitness Test)

When is testing for our area?
SBAC and CAST testing will be held at Grace Church in Jackson Tuesday, April 30 - Friday, May 3 from 9 to 12. Remember, many students will only need to test Tuesday and Wednesday, or Tuesday through Thursday. The test is not timed, however, and students have Friday to finish if they choose to.

PFT testing is being held in various locations. The closest to us is in Jackson at Grace Church on Monday, March 25th at 12:30. Here is a link to the other PFT testing locations and days that is posted on the WIRE.

_______________________________________

What if I have previous plans for the assigned testing dates that I can't change?

SBAC & CAST
- Visions will be holding make-up SBAC and CAST testing at various locations May 14th - 16th. The closest locations to us are Rescue or Carmichael. If you know you will be out of town, please let me know asap as there is a lot of planning that goes in to staffing and computer set up for the assessments. If your student is sick or does not complete all of their tests during our testing window, they would be assigned a make-up session at either Rescue or Carmichael May 14 - 16.

PFT - Use the link above to find an alternate PFT testing site and let me know so I can register your student.

Practice Test Scoring Guides

I HIGHLY recommend that students and parents begin practicing online now (maybe doing as little as one question per day). That way you can do it in small bites and not overwhelm students. Research has shown that students that spend time practicing for the SBAC earn higher scores. This is probably because they are familiar with the context. The test may present material in a very different way than you do at home, but with guidance and practice, students will understand what is being asked and can do their best at test time without anxiety.

*Note: when you sign in to the test practice as a guest, the practice tests do not save your progress from day to day or give you scores. You will need to keep track of your previous answers or just put in anything to get back to the question you stopped at. You will also need the scoring guide from the link above to assess your students progress as they go. This is not ideal, and can be a little frustrating, but with a little pre-planning it is still worth it.

Questions? Let me know :)

Work Samples - Next Meeting

What and Why...
Twice per school year, (once each semester) Visions collects work samples from students. These samples are intended to show our auditors that our enrolled students are actually enrolled, and that they are engaging in the academic activities on their master agreement. They are also used to demonstrate that there is a responsible adult who is reviewing and or grading their work.

When..
I will be collecting Semester 2 samples at our next meeting.

How...
You may submit samples from your own curriculum, use the provided samples (K-8, 9th - 12th grade courses are so variable that it is impossible to create packets), or any combination of the two. Samples must be work from LP6.

Please provide one written sample from each subject.

Instructions for using provided samples (K-8th grades):
  • Download and print the work sample packet or individual pages you intend to use.
  • Have your student complete the worksheet(s).
  • Grade and or comment on each sample in a different color than the student worked.
  • Please do not put dates or LP#s on worksheets.
  • When possible, please leave upper right corner blank for the school's generated label.
  • Match the standard code on your semester plan drop-downs for LP6 to the one on the sample.
  • Submit to CT at next meeting.
If you would rather submit samples from your own curriculum (all 9-12th graders):
  • Samples cannot be from a religious publisher (handouts, worksheets with publisher’s name on them). Handwritten work on blank or lined paper that is from religious curriculum, but is not addressing religious themes, is fine.
  • Match the standard drop-downs on your semester plan for LP6 to the samples. You can make your best guess here, and I will help you when I collect the samples.
  • Samples cannot be a test or multiple choice, they must show student work. (Samples where student just matches, underlines, or circles items are not sufficient, there must be some written work on the page.)
  • Grade and or comment on each sample in a different color than the student worked.
  • Please do not put dates or LP#s on worksheets.
  • When possible, please leave upper right corner blank for label.
  • Submit to CT at next meeting.

Search & Rescue

I have just completed the long process of applying to the El Dorado County Search & Rescue Mounted Unit and am now an official member. YAY! I am very excited to be part of an exceptional group of people who volunteer their time to help people in need.

What this might mean for you:
Probably not much. All trainings are held on weekends. However, the mounted team gets called out an average of twice per year on searches. When I get called out, I will need to be ready to drop everything immediately, go home to gather my horse and supplies, and head to the search area. Chances are this will not happen when we have a meeting scheduled -- but it could. If it does, and we have a meeting scheduled, I will notify you as soon as I get called out.

Also, SAR has regular meetings in Placerville on the second Thursday of each month. I normally have Visions family meetings scheduled that day in Jackson or Ione. I won't be able to hold meetings, get home in time to feed my animals, and make it to the meetings in Placerville. I will have to reschedule those meetings. I will contact families that this will impact separately and work with them to reschedule our meetings in a way that is most convenient for all.

Im hoping for your support in this new endeavor!

Spring Semester Plans

Spring semester is almost here. Please make sure your Spring semester plans are updated (at least through LP6) by Monday, January 28. While Visions only requires that the semester plan is updated at the beginning of each LP, many families find planning for the whole semester is easier than doing one LP at a time.

Let me know if you would like any help with this. I am happy to update the semester plan for you if you provide me with the following info:

  1. What books, materials and/or activities you are using for each subject.
  2. What unit, chapter, assignment, or pages you plan to complete each LP for each book, material and/or activity.

You can email me that info if it is easier for you. We can also set up a Virtual meeting and do the plan together if you like. Just let me know.

Remember: You are not required to use the provided semester plans - I am. What I do need from you is the info from #1 and #2 above. You can provide this information in any way that is convenient for you.

Report Cards - LP5 Meeting - UPDATED

I will be collecting report card progress (K-5) and grades (6-12) at our LP5 virtual meeting.

Here is how to prepare:

Grades K-5:
Remember, there are no real "grades" for K-5. Report cards just track progress through the grade level standards. In general: most students will be earning 2s for most categories,  a student working above grade level will earn 4s, categories not addressed yet will earn 1s, categories covered fully will earn 3s.
  • Download (or just view) sample report cards below. Look over the categories and see if you have any questions.
  • Decide if you would like to add optional effort grades and if so, have them ready to give me at our LP5 meeting.
  • Write up your overall comments to read to me at our LP5 meeting.
  • Have your progress grades ready to give me at our LP5 meeting.
  • You don't need to fill out the LP5 progress tab on the semester plan. The report card will count for that.
Grades 6-12:
  • Check in on your student's grades and progress, keep close track between now and our LP5 meeting.
  • Write up your overall comments and optional effort grades to give to me at our LP5 meeting.
  • Have your final grades updated in your Semester Plan for our LP5 meeting.
Grades 9-12:
  • Check in on your student's grades and progress, keep close track between now and our LP5 meeting.
  • Write up your overall comments to give to me at our LP5 meeting.
  • Have your final grades updated in your Semester Plan for our LP5 meeting.

You can download/view sample report cards here.

Share of the Week

Thank you to Elyse Prunty for sharing the Sacramento Bee's list of fun holiday things to do in the Sacramento area!

That article inspired me to find some other local events:

Victorian Carolers Dinner (tonight!) and A Christmas Carol (Dec. 6 - 16). Information and tickets at Baker's Street West.

First 5 Amador presents the 17th Annual Children’s Holiday Festival, Friday, December 14th from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Margaret Dalton Children’s Center on Broadway in Jackson. There will be winter festivals from around the world, activities, music, snacks, Santa and Mrs. Claus, holiday entertainment and more. This event is free, for more info call 257-1092

Do you have something fun you have been doing? Know of an event, class or other activity that other home school families might like to know about? If so, email me the info and I will share it out.

End of semester report cards and grades are on the horizon. I will be collecting report card progress (K-5) and grades (6-12) at our LP5 virtual meeting. LP5 begins on December 17th, so for many of you this won't be until after the winter break. I will repost this the first day of LP5.

Here is how to prepare:

Ski Days!

From the Wire...

2019 Home School Ski Day Dates Announced – Sign Up Now!

Love to ski or snowboard? Interested in learning how?

Visions Home School students and their immediate family members will have the exciting opportunity to ski or snowboard at our annual Ski Day events this winter.

We’re partnering with Sierra-at-Tahoe to offer multiple Ski Day dates where students can use student funds to learn the sport at discounted school group rates. Even better, family members and non-lesson students/siblings can also take advantage of the same discounted rates by paying for the tickets with personal funds.

2019 SKI DAY DATES*
Friday, Feb. 1

Friday, Feb. 8

Friday, Mar. 8

Friday, Mar. 22

To participate, families will need to fill out a Ski Days Order Form (one form for every family member) on the Visions-Sponsored Ski Days event page.

*All dates are subject to cancellation if weather conditions risk the safety of our students. Please remember that we can’t control the weather and do our best to work through its unpredictability!

PAYMENT & CANCELLATION POLICY HIGHLIGHTS (more details on event page linked above)
  • Only enrolled students who take a lesson are able to use student funds. Parents and/or non-enrolled family members will need to pay with personal funds by the close of business the Friday BEFORE the ski day date. This allows Sierra-at-Tahoe sufficient time to hire instructors.
  • Visions is able to accept check, cash, or money order only. We are unable to take credit card payments at this time.
  • Because we need to report confirmed numbers to Sierra-at-Tahoe, failure to pay for parent/non-enrolled family member tickets by the Friday before assumes the family does not wish to participate and will result in cancellation of tickets for you and your student/family members. Orders are also non-refundable after that time.
  • For ski days canceled due to weather/safety of our families, student accounts will NOT be charged and all non-student payments will be transferred to another ski date of your choice. If you would like to schedule an extra meeting for any reason: to get some help or input with curriculum, discussing teaching strategies, using Launchpad, using Pathways, or anything else you can think of, please let me know. Did You Know?

About Foothill Learning Academy?

"Our mission is to serve and support homeschool and charter school families by organizing independent teachers to provide enrichment and tutoring services to home study students."

Foothill is a Visions vendor that has K-8 classes in: science, math, history, STEM, choir, art, ASL, speech & debate, newspaper & journalism, and more!

They are located in Placerville and El Dorado Hills. I know this is a long drive for many of you, but I can tell you that the families that attend classes at Foothill love it and feel it is worth it.

Something to look into for Spring semester :)
