Work Samples

What and Why...
Twice per school year, (once per semester) Visions collects work samples from students. These samples are intended to show to our auditors that our enrolled students are actually enrolled, and that they are engaging in the academic activities on their master agreement. They are also used to demonstrate that there is a responsible adult who is reviewing and or grading their work.

When..
I will be collecting Semester 1 samples at our LP2 meeting.

How...
You may submit samples from your own curriculum, use the provided samples (K-8), or any combination of the two. Samples can be work from either from LP1 or LP2. (9th - 12th grade courses are so variable that it is impossible to create packets)

Please provide one written sample from each subject.

Instructions for using provided samples (K-8th grades):
  • Download and print the work sample packet or individual pages you intend to use
  • Have your student complete the worksheet(s)
  • Grade and or comment on each sample in a different color than the student worked
  • Please do not put dates or LP#s on worksheets
  • When possible, please leave upper right corner blank for the school's generated label
  • Check to see that the standard code on the sample matches your semester plan for either LP1 or LP2 (I already set these to match the packets, so unless you changed them, you should be good to go)
  • Submit to CT at next meeting

If you would rather submit samples from your own curriculum (all 9-12 th grades):
  • Samples cannot be from a religious publisher (handouts, worksheets with publisher’s name on them). Handwritten work on blank or lined paper that is from religious curriculum, but is not addressing religious themes, is fine.
  • Samples must match the state standards as listed on your semester plan for either LP1 or LP2
  • Samples cannot be a test or multiple choice, they must show student work (Samples where student just matches, underlines, or circles items is not sufficient, there must be some written work on the page)
  • Grade and or comment on each sample in a different color than the student worked
  • Please do not put dates or LP#s on worksheets
  • When possible, please leave upper right corner blank for label
  • Submit to CT at next meeting

K-8 Sample Packets

Please don't hesitate to call, text, or email with questions about work samples.

Semester Plans - What to do

New Families -
Don't panic! I will fill in the first learning period (LP) for you, and we will go over the semester plans together at our first meeting.

Returning Families -
Visions requires that books/materials, LP assignments, and standards are input on the semester plans prior to the first day of each LP. We can do this a number of ways:
  • You can enter them
  • We can do them together (Via phone, virtual meeting, or even a face-to-face meeting this week)
  • I can enter them (Just let me know...For this first LP, I'd use info from your ordering screen and generic placeholders, or you can provide me with specifics via email)
When you open your semester plan, you may find that I began to fill in some areas in based on your order screen.  Feel free to overwrite this info if it is incorrect.

Let me know if you have any questions, or would like to schedule a phone, virtual, or face-to-face meeting to work on semester plans together.

How to fill in your semester plan:

Curricula (texts, etc.),
The texts and/or other major materials used to guide student learning are considered curricula.
  • Enter one text or material title such as “Reach for Reading 2” or “Saxon Math 54” on each line.
  • If you are using religious or faith-based materials, use generic titles such as Mathematics 1 or Science 4.
  • If a specific web-based curriculum is used, please name it.  If multiple supplementary websites are used, name them “Website Resources.”
  • If you are using multiple sources to create a unit of learning, or no specific curriculum is being used, use the title “Teacher Generated Activities.”

Assignments
Assignments are laid out over the semester.  They are then solidified prior to the first day of each learning period.
  • Assignments must be on the same horizontal line as the curricula to which they refer and in the same column as the Learning Period in which the assignment is given.

  • Assignments can take many forms such as: Chapter, Unit, Lesson, Module, etc.  Additionally, assignments can be given as standards-based units (e.g. California Missions Unit).

  • If an assignment spans more than one learning period, it should be labeled as a sequence.  For example, the “Grapes of Wrath Novel Unit” spans three learning periods so it is labeled “Grapes of Wrath Novel Unit A,” “Grapes of Wrath Novel Unit B,” and “Grapes of Wrath Novel Unit C.”  Another example would be a math chapter that spans two learning periods would be “Chapter 3A,” and “Chapter 3B.”

  • For non-adopted curricula (no pacing guides), it is helpful if the parent lists the chapter title or main topics for the CT.  Additionally, providing a link to or a copy of the table of contents is also helpful to the CT.

Optional for Parents...Required for CTs
Focus Standards -
Focus Standards: Focus standards are those standards which are the main focus of the student’s curriculum or the parent’s lessons for a learning period.  There is no need to list every standard being covered each learning period.
  • Focus Standards: Focus standards are those standards which are the focus of the student’s curriculum or the parent’s lessons for a learning period.  There are specific guidelines for each subject area.  Please do not list every standard being covered each learning period.

  • A CT asks him/herself, “What will be the focus of my questions when visiting with the student?”  Journal this focus standard.

  • The focus standard should correlate with what the student is learning during the Learning Period.

  • Use Focus Standards only one time per year, though some may be repeated if they have separate Focus Standards labels (e.g. Then and Now A, Then and Now B).

  • Pacing guide assignments have been correlated to focus standards on a document called Standard Codes.

  • Determining the focus standard, or at least the validity, is the responsibility of the CT.

First Day Photo Contest

From the Wire:

The #VisionsFirstDay Photo Contest Is Back!
The 2018/19 school year starts next Tuesday, August 28th. To celebrate the new year we’re holding our back to school photo contest! We received so many great submissions last year – we can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

Say cheese!
To participate you’ll need to follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Show us what your first day of school looks like using the hashtag #VisionsFirstDay and be entered to win one of several $25 gift cards! Please make sure that you have a public account so we can see and share your photos. Submissions must be posted by September 9. See additional raffle rules below*.

Here’s some ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

  • Take a selfie showing your back to school excitement.
  • Show off your “home classroom”.
  • Super organized? Post a picture of your planner or desk.
  • Artsy? Create a poster to hold in your photo. Include grade, age, teacher and list of favorite things.
  • Take a photo with your teacher.

Take a look at last year’s photos on Facebook for more inspiration!

*Photos must be posted on your personal Facebook or Instagram account using the hashtag #VisionsFirstDay. To be eligible for the raffle participants must be enrolled at Visions and have a public Facebook and/or Instagram account so we can see the submissions. By using the hashtag (#VisionsFirstDay) you grant Visions In Education permission to use and repost your photos.

iReady

Are you looking for a diagnostic tool beyond your curriculum and standardized testing to help you gauge your students academic strengths and areas to target for improvement?

Consider iReady. You can order the math and Language Arts curriculum as a supplement to your regular curriculum (K-8) for $30 each, or just the diagnostic tests (K-12) for $6 each subject.

For more information, check out the website: https://www.curriculumassociates.com/Products/i-Ready

If you are interested, just let me know and I can order it for you.

Student IDs

Order your 2018-19 Visions student ID now!

While ID cards are not a requirement at Visions, I highly recommend that each student gets one each year. They are free, and they are necessary for students who need identification for any of the following: jobs, testing, field trips, enrolling in community college and receiving student discounts.

To get an ID Card, all you have to do is take a picture that follows these guidelines, and text or email it to me. I will take care of the rest. IDs will come in the mail to the address you have on file.

Currently, there is no deadline on ordering a student ID.

As you know, scheduling meetings for 36+ students is a big challenge, so I sincerely appreciate how flexible you are in this endeavor. I am sensitive to the fact that you have active lives, so I'd like to try to accommodate your restrictions as much as I can.

Please fill out this form asap to notify me of any times/days that you are unable to meet this year. Once I get responses, I'll begin to set up our meeting schedule.

MA Reminder

Electronic Master Agreements for next year were emailed out last week. Please look over and sign when you get them, as this will complete your enrollment and save your spot for next year.

Remember: Both parent and student need to sign :) You should get two email invites, one for you and one for your student.

If you are sure you are moving on to another school option for next year, you do not need to sign your MA. However, I will need to work with you to prepare your withdrawal forms during our LP10 meeting. So please send me an email confirming that you are moving on, even if we have spoken about it. (This way I won't keep bugging you about it, and I can go ahead and prepare the withdrawal forms :)

If you need me to send another invite, please email me, and I can send one out.

Let me know if you have any questions!

My Pathways account shows these students and parents/guardians have yet to sign:

Getting Ready for Report Cards

End of year report cards and grades are on the horizon. I will be collecting final report card progress (K-5) and grades (6-12) at our LP10 meeting. Here is how you can prepare:

Grades K-5:
  • Download (or just view) sample report cards below. Look over the categories and see if there are any standards you would like to focus on to ensure mastery by the end of the year. Make a plan for completion.
  • Decide on optional effort grades and have them updated in your Semester Plan for our LP10 meeting.
  • Write up your overall comments and to give to me at our LP10 meeting.

2018/19 Master Agreements

Electronic Master Agreements for next year will be sent out via email this week.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Field Trip - Alpha Fired Arts - Time Sensitive

So...Initially, I got lots of interest in this field trip, but I don't have even one person signed up yet. The venue needs me to confirm at least 20 participants by Friday in order to make this go :) If you are interested, make sure to sign up by Thursday so I can get back to her with a confirmation or a cancellation.

Thanks!

Instructions for signing up:

  • Submit a separate sign up form for each student who is enrolled in Visions. The sibling section of the form is for siblings that are not enrolled in Visions and for whom the parents will be paying out of pocket.
  • If more than one parent will be going, please put both names in the "Parent's Name" section of the signup form.
  • For parents, siblings who are not enrolled in Visions, and students who have used all of their student funds, please submit payment with this form. You can either send the money in to Visions, or hand it to me at the event.
  • Please bring a completed permission slip (one per family).

We will be doing a "Paint a Masterpiece" plate. (Van Gogh's Sunflowers)
